Resident 27. John Day was fined 5s for being drunk, 5s for riding on the foot-path of Taupo-quay on 18th Nov.,' with 17 2s 6d costs. H: B. Roberts e. N. Salomon. Mr. Roberts claimed 15/ as compensation for a gold watch he had bought from defendant, when here recently, for 28/, but .which had turned out not to be equal to what was represented. It was guaranteed as of a very superior description, and to go for five years, whereas it would not go at all until the watchmaker had repaired it. Evidence was given as to the purchase of the watch and the representation made of its quality. W. Mayers, watchmaker, who had *aken it to pieces at Mr. Roberts’ request, deposed,—Tho watch in question is not a first-class highly finished watch. I found the drum in a very bad state, so much friction when the drum rotated as to cause a mark in the plate; the mainspring likewise was improperly made. There was friction between the centre wheel and another ; the screws of the compensation balance were , not properly finished, the tube of the seconds hand was split. I would sell the watch in question in a, similar state for 18/. If it were perfect it would sell here for 25/. I would not sell a watch in such condition to any one. The wholesale price in liiverpool of a watch of this description would be about 14/. I made the watch go ; it may go for a few years—drag; along. Mr. Roberta had written to defendant claiming compensation, but had received no answer. Proof was given that the summons had been served on the defendant, and judg-

And lastly, Major Trafford, who landed here fifteen years ago from ;he ‘ Inflexible ’ as Lieutenant in the Grenadier company of the 65th, in which regiment he is still remembered with fond . enthusiasm by. those formerly under his command, left on Tuesday, to go home by the first steamer via Suez. Major Trafford’s intention is to return in about a year, the trip being .taken .for .the, benefit of his - health, which some time r&gowaa—verymuch 1 impaired, but is now considerably improved- "He was entertained to dinner by a few of his oldest Iriends on Monday evening last.' Thos. B. Taylor, Esq., presided, and Major Durie acted as vice. The evening.was spent very pleasantly, the only drawback being the prospect of the guest’s absence for so long a period. Wb wish him a pleasant and beneficial trip. •These losses are, however, more than made up by the return, the other day, of two of our townsmen with their young and lovely brides.
