LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

The Assault Case. — Wirihana was captured last week by the native police, but rescued by six armed King natives. The N. Z. Steam Navigation Company propose extending their operations, and as the matter is of great importance to the Province, we trust that a large number of the settlers will attend at a meeting to be held shortly, at which Captain Rhodes will explain what is intended.

Rifle Volunteers. — The two Town Companies were disbanded on the 27th, inst. and thereafter a meeting was held in the Commercial Hotel, to determine as to future proceedings. Lieut. Ross read some correspondence between Major Rookes and the authorities on the point in dispute. Thereafter some discussion took place as to matters of fact in connection with the last enrolment and election of officers under Major Durie, and also as to the position which a senior Captain gave to

his Company. Mr. Broughton complained that no principle was laid down by Deputy Adjutant General Balneavis ; and supposed as an instance Mr. Porter’s being again elected as Captain. His company would by the present decision be senior. But if he resigned and another Captain were elected junior to other officers of the same rank in the same according to the present decision it seemed that then the Company would be also considered junior. Mr. Porter said that would be the case if the Companies were disbanded and a new election took place, but not otherwise. Eventually, two proposals were put to the meeting — one more by Mr. J. Pawson and seconded by Mr. Kirk, “That the Rifle Volunteers do not re-enrol themselves until the Major Commanding here is re-called.” The other was proposed by Mr. Field and seconded by Mr. D. Bell, “That the settlers now present who are willing to re-enrol as Volunteers agree to form one strong Company.” The latter motion was carried by a majority of 35 to 26. Another motion was made, but was not put to the meeting.

The same afternoon 41 men were attested, and elected the following officers : Captain, D. Porter; Lieutenant, W. Davidson ; Ensign, J. Peake.
