The object of the proposed Company sto purchase # a, Steam Vessel of a size .nd draught of water suitable for the equirements of the trade of Wanganui. It is intended that she shall be laid on ,s a regular trader. between Wellington .nd Wanganui, and shall also be em)ioy d in conveying Cattle and Goods o other porta as [the Directors may arange It is believed that the time has now :ome for such an alteration in the means if communication with.- other ports as his Company contemplates. The ralidly increasing ti’ade of Wanganui, the ;reat difficulty settlers have in conveying heir, cattle to a market, band the increasng demand in . the more , thickly popula ed parts of the ' country for" the rural >roduce of this district, all point out the lecessity for placing the coasting trade if this place on a more sat sfactory ooting. It is well known that the conveyance if Cattle and Goods by sailing vessels for hort coasting voyages is uncertain, and n the- case of,perishable merchandize dmost impracticable. The facilities litherto afforded by the Wellington steam Navigation Company, while periaps all that could be reasonably expec,ed, have not met the wants of the district ; an I serious loss both of time and noney has been occasioned by the frequent delays occasioned by the want of jower of the steamers or other causes, md by the unsuitable accommodation in ;hem for cattle and sheep. The. vessel which it is proposed to purchase will be a Screw Steamer of ibout 296 tons, burthen or 150 tons redster, drawing when loaded ft., with h ft. beam and 140 ft. \ over all; built md fitted up wit-h . moveable stalls, for ffie accommodation of Cattle. It is believed at . present that such a vessel is being built in anticipation of i proposal made being accepted : and as ;he order for the steamer goes home by die September mail, if is reasonable to jxpect she will be here in less- than i'iie months. It may be with confidence anticipated ffiat this Company will be able to secure i considerable addition to its income by the carriage of the mails, between this md Wellington. The steamers. at pres3at bringing the mail once a month receive *SOO per annum for the service.
