LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The Hut ■ Subschiptiom.—Wq liave received the two following letters in explanation of the mystery hanging over the subscription made •by a few of the inhabitants for helping the soldiers of the .17th to build comfortable huts for themselves. It will -be observed that the money so subscribed lias, been returned to Mr. Findlater, who will return it to the subscribers, on application being made. . Sir, — Having observed a letter in the Chronicle , of the 6th instant, hearing your signature, relative to the sum of £l l2s. having been subscribed by certain inhabitants of Wanganui for the purpose of erecting huts for a company of the 67th regiment who were located in tents near the creek,—l have, in the name of the detachment, to tender thanks for their kindness. ' It would perhaps be advisable to mention, that as the wood .furnished was not sufficient for the number of huts required, being four, they, were consequently not built; and while waiting for tlie remainder (not yet' received), the company moved into barracks. I now, on the part of tlie officers, beg to return you the.sum of £G 195., which, with the balance of 13s. in your hands,, will make up the total £7 12a. . I have to remark that Captain Stewart’s let-, ter is perfectly correct, and that his huts, the only ones built, were Greeted • prior to any wood having been delivered. I purpose publishing a copy of this, and decline any further letter writing, on the subject. ; I remain, 1 ' ’ - ■ Sir, _ . Your obedt. Servant, ■ .. Sir,—l beg to acknowledge the receipt of yotira of "the 7th instant, returning th inks, m name of the oitieers of H.M. 57th "regiment, i to the gentlemen .who gave subscriptions for, assisting to build huts for the soldiers of that I regiment, and at same time returning me C 6 I 9 j. j —being the a .nount expended out of the sub- | s.-ri]itions. I do not any more than you wish to have I more “letter writing on the subject,” but you j will allow me to say that, admitting Captain j Stewart’s company did not participate in the subscriptions, he was wrong in asserting that "ho such subscriptions had been made for the detachment of.the 57th regiment, or that the materials had not been, delivered, the best proof of “ Fireman’s” statement being correct, and which Captain .Ste Wart quotes in his letter, to j the Editor of the Chronicle, is that you have | returned the money paid out, because it hot j ■ subscribed how comes it to pass that you re- j pay the amount. . ■ I •As you are sending your .letter, to • the , Chronicif, I also send a copy of my. reply to you, .so that they.may appear in the sarn? issue of that paper;'and, in conclusion, I beg to state that h id'not Captain Stewart’s letter led more than one i f the subscribers to ask me what had j become of their subscriptions, 1 would not have 5 iut- rfered in the matter, hut as they had a ! right to know how it' was expended, 1 had no other course left to me hut publish the subscription list, and an account of the disbursements made, which lam glad'to say has been satisfactory to the subscribers. I am, Sir, Your obedt. Servant, Jas. Findlathr.
