LOCAL INTELLIFENCE.
Rifle Volunteers.—A general meeting of the town volunteers was held in the Rutland Hotel, oh the evening of Thursday the 20th inst. ■ Thomas Powell, JEsq., was oalled to the chair. The meeting passed a resolution to the effect:That those’ members of the late Companies wishing to re-ehrol themselves should hand in their names., -We believe that about 20 names were received.
A meeting of No. 2 Company was held in the Rutland Hotel, on the evening of Monday . last the 24th inst.—Mr. Rowell in the chair—when the following resolutions were unanimously passed . 1. That the members of. the late No. 2 Company, W.R.V., are willing to transfer their share in the iron targets ; to any Corps of Town Volunteers that may be formed, provided tnat the members of the late No. 1 Companydo the same,. 2. That a vote of thanks be given to Mr. Porter for, the very gentlemanly way in which he has commanded , the No. 2 Company, of Volunteers for the last two years, and also to express the wish that we maybe allowed to serve under him in the future. . ~ . „
3' That the thanks of the members of the late No. 2 Company, W.R.V., be given to the other commissioned and non-commissioned officers of the Company for the manner in which they have dis- v charged their several duties. 4. That the thanks of the members of ,
the late No. 2 Company, W.R.V., be given to the late Treasurer, Chairman, Secretary and Members.of Committee, for the very able manner in which tliey have conducted tlie business of the late Company. On the same evening a meeting, of; No. 1 Company was held. Mr. Beaven was called to the chair. The Treasurer read a statement of accounts, from which it appeared that there remained XI 2s. 3d. in hand. The Secretary read a statement of the band fund, Both statements .were. ; received as correct. On the 'motion of Mr. H, J. Jones, seconded by Mr. Pawson, it was resolved— That the. surplus funds be appropriated toward a presentation to Sergeant Heywood, in acknowledgment of his services to the band.
Mr. J. G. Woon moved, and -Mr. Findlater seconded the ,< motion, which was unanimously carried —That members of* the late No. 1 Company return their sincere thanks for the assiduous manner in which the officers of said . Company have' performed their duties, and for the interest they have taken in the welfare and working of the Company. A motion was also proposed by Mr. Woon, seconded iby Mi*. Rrougbton, /and unanimously, passed,— .- .. That the.gentlemen, who have .submitr. ted their:names use their ? endeavours to make known the intention to rejorm the if possible, and. of their adjourning this meeting until Thursday evening next for . that purpose, as also the consideration of any other business. All present at the meeting (about. 30). gave in their names. ?
