10th January, 1862. Sir,— Upwards of two years ago, when the No. 1 contract of No. 3 line was completed, there remained a certain surplus fund for the continuation of Nos. 2 and 3 contracts of the above line ; also the following year the sum of £BOO was placed on the estimates for the above purpose, but not applied ; again, this year, the sum of £SOO has been voted, and has been placed to the credit of the above line; nearly five months have elapsed—the summer is rapidly passing away—no contracts have been issued for the construction of said line—and for six months in the year traffic i 3 entirely stopped ; .even at this present moment the road we use on sufferance, a stranger on horseback is in danger of being sloughed within a mile of the town. Now, as a settler on this line, the disadvantages experienced by not having a. proper road for myself and neighbours, I feel called upon, through the medium of your paper, to inquire, what is the reason No. 3 h&s been so long neglected T F. W. 10th January, 1862. Sir, —lt has often afforded me much surprise that our good little town should so long have to Wait for its re-christening by the Post Office authorities. It must be remembered by many, that an act was passed in a bygone session of the house of Representatives, restoring the aboriginal name of Wanganui to this place, instead of the perhaps otherwise more illustrious title of “Petre” given to it by the original New Zealand Company. This order has since taken effect in all official correspondence addressed here ; our Post Office authorities alone seem unadvised of the change. Wanganui, in many places, is considered as a mere dependency of “ Petre,” from the fact that all letters posted here have no Post Office acknowledgment of their birthright; besides, the commercial importance is lessened, as Wanganui has no place in postal directions. Trusting that you will bring this matter forward for Consideration in the proper quarter, I remain, yours, &c. » Salt-Petrr.
