STATISTICS OF NEW ZEALAND FOR 1860.
From the carefully elaborated tables (a labour of love apparently to Mr. Bennet, the Registrar General) of which by the courtesy of the Colonial Secretary we receive.il a copy last week we glean'the following particulars, in addition to what we formerly published in regard to imports and, exports. The returns are made up to d> Ist December, 1860. Population. —-European. Males 48,941 j females 34,978. Total 83,919, of whom 4294 are soldiers and their famines. Since December 1858 there is an increase by excess of births ( 5792) jover deaths (1795) of 3997 j and of immigration over emigration of 14,791. The increase per cent, is of males 31.10,. and of females 32.09. The increase per cent, in the various provinces is Auckland 30.56;: Wellington 17.73; i/awkes I'ay 55.28; Nelson and Marlborough 29.42 ; Canterbury 71.40; Otago 82.70. There is a decrease in Taranaki of 53.24 per cent.. Tiie Maori population is estimated at. 31,298 males and 23,898 females, making with 79 whose sex is not given a total of 55,275, of whom 53,056 are in the North Island.
Letters received 434,320 ; despatched 456 049; Newspapers received 471,664; lies patched 557,692.
ptevenue.-r-OviWm'sy £283,107 ; Territorial £215,760;. incidental .£16,871; increase over 1859 is £5090, On the Ordinary Revenue the increase from 1859 is £24,661. It. consists of Customs £189,520, increase £21,140 ; post- office £i0,066, increase £2, 225 ; fees and fines £20,556, increase £l, 373; licenses £10,753, increase £618; there is a decrease on miscellaneous revenue which makes the difference. 7’he territorial revenue shews a decrease of £26,122 from 1859, It consists of Crown lands £195,447, decrease £28,117; timber licenses £364, increase £l2O, depasturing licenses and assessments £18,944, increase £2127 ; rents and incidental receipts £IOOS, decrease £250. There is an increase in t! e incidental revenue of £6551.
Courts of Justice —ln Supreme Courts Criminal Committals 97, Convictions 69, Civil cases 102, of which tried by Jury 24, disposed of by judge 20, judgment by default 58. In District Courts criminal committals 31, convictions 22, civil cases 629, of which tr el by jury 13, disposed of by judge 454, judgment by default 162: In 1 esident Magistrates’ Courts—Criminal committals of Europeans 5132, convictions 2903 {l3Bl being for drunkenness); criminal lonmittah t>’ il/aories 121, convictions 103, (36 lei g lor drunke ness); civil cases between Europeans 5588, in which £42,291 was sued for and £21,227 recovrod ; European against 71/aories 145, sum sued for £1487, recovered £502; Maories against Europeans 89, in which £1389 was sued for and £649 recovered ; between Maories 65 cases, in which £720 was sued for and £303 recovered.
Savings' Banks. —iVumber of depositors in 1860, 1066 Europeans and 38 Maories; deposited by Europeans .£23,795, by Maories .£806; withdrawn by Europeans £11,493, by Maories £658. It would lmve been interesting to know the amount remaining, but this is not given. The only provinces in wliiclr the Maories deposited are Auckland and Wellington. In Auckland they deposited £4op and withdrew nothing. Jn Wellington'they deposited £350 and 'withdrew £628. In Taranaki they deposited nothing and withdrew £29.
Prices.— A list of average prices in the various provinces during 1860 is included-ih the returns, wl i h so far as it can be relied on shews that on the whole prices are pretty equal throughout the country. Such an error as the quotation of 225. as the price of 1961b5. flour in Wellington should be corrected.
