Rifle Volunteers —A special meeting of the committee of No. 1 Company was held in the Rutland Hotel on the evening of Monday, last, for the purpose of presenting colour sergeant Sargent with a mark of the Company s respect for him as a man, and of their appreciation of his efficient services as a drill instructor. Mr.- Stokes, the chairman of the committee, in a short address, in which'he complimented Mr. Sargent on his satisfactory fulfilment of duties requiring in an eminent degree both promptness and patience, and his gentlemanly, bearing during the course of instruction, presented him with the testimonial, consisting of a handsome watch and Albert chain. The gallant sergeant replied in appropriate, terms, thanking most sincerely the members of the Company for the unexpected token of their approval of his services with which they had favoured him,"and expressing the pleasure with which lie wotild ever look back on his connection with them, the confidence that their efficiency in drill would show itself if they were' ever called into active service, and the pleasure he would always feel in hearing of the welfare of those gentlemen of the Company with whom hi's duties had led him to be more particularly acquainted.
Metf.rawa 72 cad District. —A meeting of the ratepayers in this district was held on the 21st ult. in the Lion inn, for the purpose of appointing auditors to examine the last year’s accounts, of voting a rate for the ensuing year, and of electing a Board of Wardens. In consequence of public, business in the town detaining some of the ratepayers, the attendance was not so large as has been usual. Dr. Allison was called to the chair, and Mr. 7/arrison, the chairman of the late board, addressed the meeting at some length explanatory of the board’s proceedings during the past year. After some discussion, Messrs. Allison, Good son, and Wilson were elected to audit the accounts; those of the late board who were present were re-elected, and to them were added Messrs. Allison, R. Hume, Goodson, and G. A/cGregor. A rate of twopence per acre was then voted ; and the meeting, after a lengthened discussion, carried on, we are happy to state, for the most part in a friendly and good humoured spirit, separated.
