Woof, —Messrs. B. Gold trough and Co. reportln consequence of the limited quan.- ‘ tity coming forward, the usual sales by auc- ’ tion have not been held this week. We have, however, to report having transacted a. fair amount of business by private contract,, having sold about 300 bales greasy and fleece at from 9d to Is 10|d per lb. There is a, brisk inquiry fur both fleece and greasy wools, and more especially for good lots, of which, there are now very few in the market. A very large proportion of the spirits nowconsumed in the Colony is illicitly distilled, and spirits have been, to an immense extent superseded by colonial beer, which is manufociured in enormous quantities, not only in Melbourne, but on all the interior gold fields. Throughout the interior the inhabitants, as a rule, are making great progress in industrial pursuits. In fact, we should say that the bulk of our population is in a prosperous state ; as a .proof of which we may mention that tlie bills in the banks were never more punctually met than at the present momcut. It is true that a considerable portion of our trading community complain grievously of dull times andlackof profits; but these arise from circumstances well known to our readers altogether independent of the financial stateof the colony, and over which the colonists. dsb not possess the slightest.control.
