LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
f Examination of the Common School.— —This annual / examination took place on Friday, and was attended by the members of Committee and several visitors, including the clergymen of the place!, with the exception of M. Pezant, whom particular business prevented from being present. The scholars, to the number of 60 or 70, were examined in the various branches taught, and showed considerable proficiency, especially in Grammar and Geography. At the close several prize* were awarded to those who had distinguished themselves by diligence during the year.
Auction Sale.—Messrs. Powell and Co. held an l extensive Auction Sale of General Merchandise on' Monday last. No reserve having been-placed'upon the Goods—there was a large'attendance of buyers ; the biddings were spirited, and the prices realised were mostly satisfactory. Improvement of Glasgow street. —At .a meeting held at Mr. H. Nathan’s of the ratepayers in Glasgow street, on Wednesday. 20th Feb., at 2 o’clock p.m., Mr. Nathan in the chair, it was proposed by Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Martelli, and carried unanimously,—“ That a uniform rate of 4s per acre be levied on all lands likely to be benefited .by the road through Glasgow street”. It was proposed by Mr. Vincent, and seconded by Mr. J. Cathro, —“ That the rate levied shall be paid by two equal instalments; the first in two months from this date,, and the second when the work designed is completed.” Kahauraponga Road District,. Rangitikei AND; Turakina'.—The fiist annual meeting of owners and occupiers of land in this district was held at Mr. B. Smith’Sj Overton, J?angitikei, on Friday, 28th Dec. 1860, when the folldwing’gentlemen were appointed wardens—Messrs. H. G. Mussen, Alex. Milne, James Wilson, W. H. Crawford, A. JFilliamson, and H. Amphlet; after w hich a resolution was passed, respectfully, but earnestly, calling upon the settlefs in the Upper part of /2angitikei to assist by subscriptions in constructing the proposed road, which will be manifestly thej high road for them to Wanganui. Mr. H. G.( Mussen was subsequently appointed chairman 1 to the board; and at a meeting held on Mon-1 day, the 11th inst., it was unanimously resolved, that’a. Vote of twopence per acre should be levied for the year 1861 on land in the Kahauraponga road district, such rate' to be payable on Ist May next. ' - • Market at Turakina. the cattle sale held lately at Turakina was over, a conversation took . place among the settlers in . the'distriet 1 , large number of whom were ; present, as to the advantages to be derived j from a periodical market being held there for all i kinds of country produce. The large extent of . eopntry Under tillage within a short distance Was thought to warrant the’establishment of, such a market, which would give an impulse 1 especially to the production of dairy produce ; j and it was resolved to hold a meeting on theli first Tuesday of March to make the necessary L arrangements. ,
