The volunteer movement has been taken up. On the 23rd July a meeting was held at which a committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements.
Complaints are made of the high price ef timber. ’
A branch of the Oriental Bank has been established at Dunedin.
Oamaru.—- We are glad to learn that this thriving, township is progressing with a rapidity equal to anything that has been seen in this flourishing province. There are, upwards of thirty houses already clustered about the ceitro of the township; and several other
b iildings are in course of construction, includng a large store for Messrs. Dalgety, Buckley aid Co., a Canterbury firm. By the way, our Dunedin merchants are sadly neglecting their own interests in not occupying the field themselves. There will be about 2500 bales wool shipped at Oamaru of the ensuing clip. We understand that there will be a sale of town lands directly, a large number of additional sections having been laid off.— Otago Colonist.
