POPULATION OF NEW ZEALAND.

The following statistics, token from the tables appended to Mr. Fenton’s observations on the state of the aboriginal population of New Zealand, 1859, and from the A'ew Zealand Statistics of the same year, may be interesting at present:—

North Island. AUCKLAND PROVINCE. District from the North Cape to Mokau river on the west coast, N.E. bead of Hawk’s Bay on the east coast. —European population, 18,177 ; native population, 38,269. NEW PLYMOUTH OR TARANAKI PROVINCE — SEAT OP THE WAR.

District around Mount Egmont, bounded by Mokau river on the north, Cook’s-Straits aud Patea river on the east. European population, 2,650 ; native population, 3,015. WELLINGTON PROVINCE, INCLUDING HAWKE’S BAY. District from Patea river, Cook’s Straits, to east coast —the south-eastern portion of the island. European population, 13,242;. native population, 11,7-72. South or. Middle Island. NELSON PROVINCE.

Northern portion of Middle island. European population, 9,272; native population, 1,120. CANTERBURY PROVINCE. Central portion of Middle Island. European population, 8,967 ; native population, 638. OTAGO PROVINCE. Southern portion of Middle island. European population, 6,944; native population, 525.

Total Europeans at Christmas, 1858, in eluding military and families, (1896 souls), 61,148 ; total natives at same time, 53,339. At the same date in the North island—total number of Europeaus, 35,069; total number of natives, 53,056. The following shows the most populous native- districts of the North Island. AUCKLAND PROVINCE.

North of the city of Auckland, 8454 natives considered well affected ; Thames river, 40 miles east of Auckland, 1428 ditto ; Waikato and Waipa rivers, about 3000, mixed. Tauranga, East Capo, 7POO, mixed; Aotgrua Lakes

and Bay of Plenty, 6100, ditto; Taupo Lake, 2000, ditto; West coast, between Waikato and Mokau, 2265, well disposed. Ihaiah, the /Faitara chief so long opposed to William King, lives now with his friends near Mokau. Of the New Plymouth natives, about half reside on the coast between Cape Egraonfc (Cook’s Straits) and the Patea river. Many of these are members of the Land League, <ytd can reach the insurgent natives at Waitara by a track up the Patea river, rouml the back of the mountain, as well as the coast lme. Wellington province. Wanganui river and tributaries, 3587 natives ; Cook’s Straits, from Patea to Poriiua, exclusive of Uanganui, 3061 ditto; Hawkes Bay, 3673 ditto. - . The district east of the Thames and.Waukato rivers is perhaps the most populous pat fc of the island, containing about 16,000 natives* The only accessible routes to New Plymouth from the north are along the west coast, or up the JFaipa river to. the head of the Mokau,, thence to its mouth and along the coast.

Many of the Taupo and Waikato people aredisaffected, having joined the king movement.;, but as the Waikatos were the old enemies and conquerors of the Taranaki and Cook’s Strait, tribes, they have not sympathised much with their Cookees (slaves) —William King, and; people. About three-eighths of the native popula--tion consists of females, and some deduction is to he made from the remaining five-eighths for. children under 14 years of-age.-
