Local Intelligence.
A meeting was held in the Rutland Hotel on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of expressing sympathy with the sufferers at Taranaki, and to take measures for affording them some relief. It was not largely attended, but the feeling was good, and upwards of £40 was subscribed before its termination. Wm. Watt, Esq., was in the chair. It was proposed by Mr. Geo. Roberts and seconded by Mr. Nathan, — “ That a committee of three be appointed to draw up an address expressive of our sympathy for the sufferings of our fellow colonists at New Plymouth, whose privations we deplore, and by soliciting subscriptions, to raise a sum of money to be forwarded to the Superintendent of that province to assist their present necessities.” It was proposed by Mr. Hammond and seconded by Mr. Russell, — “That a subscription list be opened at once.” Both resolutions were carried unanimously, and a committee was appointed consisting of Dr. Gibson, and Messrs. Geo. Roberts and W. Watt.
