TARANAKI.

[From the Herald , 4th inst.] Mr. Kaymond, formerly Manager of the Wellington Branch, but recently appointed Inspector of the numerous establishments of the Union Bank of Australia in New Zealand, paid us a flying visit per Airedalo on Tuesday last. In reply to a direct question by us, if he intended to open a branch at New Plymouth, the Inspector replied, that owing to his recent arrival from Melbourne he had been unable to ascertain whether a suitable Manager could be spared from any of the New Zealand branches, and w r as therefore at present unprepared to give a decisive answer. He was, however, in correspondence with Mr. Inspector McMullen on the subject of that officer’s report to the Board of Directors in London, forwarded at the conclusion of his tour of inspection in August last, the reply to which could only have reached Sydney per last English mall, and had not yet been communicated to 3»m. Under these circumstances he could only promise to forward a final auswer by the April steamer. Should the reply from the London Board be favourable a branch would be opened at Taranaki with the least possible delay.” We candidly own our disappointment at not receiving a more satisfactory answer, and if we advise ovr readers to wait until April instead of inviting the Oriental Bank to open a Branch forthwith, it is from the conviction that the Union Bank, with the great colonial experience of its officers, will be of more real benefit to our community.
