Y.M.C.A. Boys’ Camp.

All boys who are attending the Masterton Y.M.C.A. camp at Castlepoint who have not produced their ration coupons and have not a list of camp requirements are requested to call on the general secretary, Mr Johansen, at 11 a.m. tomorrow. The matter is urgent.

Growing of Beans. The trouble mentioned by a correspondent in regard to the non-forma-tion of runner bean pods is due to hot, dry weather, states Mr Mason Davey, Government horticultural instructor, Masterton. Mr Davey says that under these conditions the sap rushes past the flowers to the shoots and in consequence the pollen has not sufficient vitality to set. The tops of the beans shoufcl be pinched off and the plants sprayed with water in the evening to cool them down. The same remarks applied to broad beans.

Tdmato Prices. On Christmas Eve the retail price in Wellington for best quality tomatoes was 2s 6d per lb. Since then the warm weather has brought on the crops in Marlborough and Nelson, and prices are becoming lower. Firm ripe No. I’s brought Is 4d per lb. at the markets yesterday, but there were over-ripes (fit only for sauce or cooking) that were retailed at 6d per lb. In between were good coloured, which sold for Is Id per lb. Last night 3s 2d was being asked for the best tomatoes—and none too firm at that—in a Willis Street shop.
