NO STRIKE

ON AMERICAN RAILWAYS ASSURANCE BY UNION OFFICIALS ON EVE OF NOTICE TAKING EFFECT (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, December 29. A Washington message says the Secretary__fpr War (Mr Stimson) announced that there will be no railway strike. Representatives of the three unions, the Order of Railroad Conductors, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers and the Switchmen’s Union of North America, today assured General Somervell (Railways Controller) that they and the organisations they represented will take no action that will imperil the successful prosecution of the war and will immediately cancel the strike order. The cancellation of the strike came barely 18 hours before it was to have been put into effect, at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
