MADE BY UNITED STATES MARINES TOWARDS NEW BRITAIN AIRFIELD. ATTACKERS WITHIN MILE OF OBJECTIVE. LONDON, December 29. American marines fighting on New Britain have advanced to a mile of the Cape Gloucester airfield. A South-West Pacific communique states that east and west of the Cape Gloucester landing points, the American Marines have extended their beachheads against sharply increased enemy oppoistion. A new advance has brought the Marines within a mile of the airfield.

Naval bombers have raided the island of Nauru.
