SINKING OF SCHARNHORST MESSAGES FROM ROOSEVELT . & STALIN. SIGNIFICANCE EMPHASISED IN CANADA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, December 29. President Roosevelt has sent a telegram to Mr Churchill stating: “The sinking of lhe Scharnhorst has been great news Io all of ns. Congratulations to the Home Fleet. Marshal Stalin, in a message to Mr Churchill, stated: “I send you personally and also to Admiral Sir Bruce . Fraser and his valiant sailors of the Duke of York, my congratulations on this splendid blow.” That the Battle of the North Atlantic rank well with the Battle of Britain and the siege of Stalingrad as crucial victories was the opinion expressed by the Canadian Navy Minister, Mr McDonald, in a Christmas and New Year message. Declaring that the U-boa't menace was defeated, Rear-Admiral L. W. Murray, commander of the Canadian North-West Atlantic Fleet, expressed the hope that before the end of 1944 the Allied naval and air forces would shift their main activities from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
