ENEMY WITHDRAWAL
MAY FOLLOW ON FALL OF ORTONA FIRES BURNING IN NEXT TOWN BETTER WEATHER ON FIFTH ARMY FRONT (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, December 28. The fall of Ortona may be followed by a considerable German withdrawal in the Adriatic coastal sector of the Italian front. Fires are already burning in Tolle, which is the next place ahead of the Eighth Army. A correspondent with the Eighth Army, referring to the severity of the fighting inside Ortona, said: “You kill a German to gain a yard. The Germans actually lowered tanks into the basements of houses. These, with their guns poking out from cellar windows, formed almost indestructible strongpoints.” Rain is continuous along the Eighth Army front. The Fifth Army is more fortunate and enjoys clear, cold weather. Floods along the Garigliano are beginning to recede. A new attack in the Cassino area is expected to be imminent.
