RUSSIAN SOUTH-WESTWARD DRIVE IN KIEV SALIENT

Direct Threat to German Main Communications

CONTINUED PROGRESS IN WHITE RUSSIA

DECISIVE BATTLE FOR VITEBSK IN NEAR PROSPECT

LONDON, December 28. The Russian offensive in the Kiev salient continues to develop in great strength towards the south-west. Sixty towns and villages were captured by the Russians today. Three big columns are threatening one of the main German transport arteries. The capture by the Russians of two railway towns they are reported to be nearing would place the German southern armies in a critical position and make them dependent on the supply route by way of Odessa. The Germans have not had time to remove tanks damaged in batile. The Russians were reported today to be within ten miles of Jitomir. In White Russia, Soviet forces are closing in on Vitebsk and the battle for that great German base may soon break.
