ISOLATED POSTS QUICKLY OVERRUN VETERANS OF GUADALCANAL TAKE PART. CHRISTMAS MORNING SUCCESS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.25 a.m.) RUGBY, December 27. Describing the latest American landing at Cape Gloucester, a correspondent adds: American marines, many of them veterans of Guadalcanal, effected a landing at Cape Gloucester early on Christmas morning, under cover of a terrific naval and air bombardment, and are pushing towards the aerodrome. The landing was unopposed by ground troops. The few isolated posts encountered were soon ‘ overrun by the marines, who suffered no casualties.

Long Island is 30 miles from the coast of New Guinea and about 70 miles beyond the present Australian front. It lies almost halfway between Cape Gloucester and Madang about ninety miles from each. Manus, the chief island in the Admiralty Group, lies 220 miles due north of Long Island and marks the north-western limits of the Bismark -Sea. Cape Gloucester is about 70 miles from the American landing at Arawe and the same distance from the Australian front in New Guinea.

MARSHALLS. RAIDED

SEVERAL FIRES STARTED WASHINGTON, December 26. Several fires were started when Air Force Liberators attacked Wotje in the Marshall Islands, stated a Navy Department report. Light bombers escorted by Airacobras raided Mili on Saturday. Two of our bombers were slightly damaged. A navy search Liberator delivered an attack from a low altitude on two small transports near Kwajalein and probably sank one transport.
