CARTERTON

ELECTRICITY CUT OFF CAUSED BY A GOOSE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Last evening a Chester Road resident went to catch a goose for his family’s Christmas dinner. Not having it penned up in readiness he essayed to run it down. After chasing it for some time the goose took to flight. Suddenly the whole Chester Road electric current was cut off. Complaints were made to the Power Board trouble men, and later the lights were again restored. It was not ascertained until this morning that the damage had been caused by the goose coming in contact with the wires, a very lame bird being caught and put out of its misery. Personal Items. A very enjoyable gathering took place at the business premises of Mr C. K. Goodin, radio and cycle dealer. Carterton, when Miss Betty Hack, who has been in the employ of the firm for some years, and had left to be married, was presented with a cheque by Mr Goodin. In making (he presentation. Mr Goodin spoke in eulogistic terms of Miss Hack's business capabilities and expressed the wish that her future life would be one of happiness and prosperity. Mr and Mrs 11. Brown, ol Wellington, will be the guests of Mr and Mrs H. King. Wyndham Street, over Christmas, and intend to spend their 28th Christmas dinner together. Mrs C. E. Thomas, Palmerston North, arrived in Carterton yesterday and will spend the Christmas holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs Scott, Kokolau. Mr and Mrs P. A. Cole and Mrs Hastie left today for Paekakariki where they will spend a holiday. Mrs Rzoska, of Chester Road, Clareville, has received advice from the Minister of Defence that her son, Pte. Stanley J. Rzoska. is missing in Italy. Mr Lauric Curtis, who will take part in the New Zealand bowling tournament at Dunedin, has left for Wellington. Mr and Mrs Beaven left today to spend the holidays in Wanganui. Mr and Mrs Churchouse, of Garrison Street, have left for Christchurch. Mr and Mrs F. B. Knutson and family, of Dixon Street, have gone to Castlepoint for the holidays. First Lieutenant Garth Roydhouse, who has been on service overseas, has returned to Carterton. ' Interference With Water Races. It is notified by the Wairarapa South County Council that any person found interfering with any water race, weir or fluming controlled by the Council will be prosecuted. Regent Pictures. A special programme will be screened at the Regent Theatre tonight. Two excellent pictures will be shown. “Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror,” and “Sing For Your Supper.” On Christmas night, Gene Tierney and Randolph Scott will be seen in the thrilling drama, “Belle Starr.” Grass Fire A grass fire yesterday in the backyard of a cottage occupied by Mrs Playlc caused an alarm of fire to be sounded at 12.30 o’clock. The brigade soon had the fire out.
