“WIN THE WAR”
NEW LABEL FOR PARTY DESIRED BY PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT REPUBLICAN REJOINDER (By Telegraph—Press Association—vopyngnt) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, December 23. The White House Secretary, Mr Stephen Early, tola a Press conference that President Roosevelt desires to discard the term “New Deal” in favour of “Win the War,” as a party label. Mr Early commented that the phrase “New Deal” was born in 1932 and is now out of date. Mr Harrison Spangler, chairman of the Republican National Committee, promptly issued a statement: "Can the leopard change his spots? Evidently Mr Roosevelt thinks so, when he tells the Press he wants to get away from the tattered emblem of the New Deal. The American people, a day after Pearl Harbour, adopted the slogan “Win the War.” After two years, Mr Roosevelt has caught up with them, but the spots still remain.”
