JAPANESE IN TIMOR

DEMAND FOR WITHDRAWAL.

INSPIRED ARTICLE IN LISBON

(By Telegraph—(Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, December 23.

An inspired article demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Japanese from Timor has appeared in the “Jornal Di Commercio,” of Lisbon, reports Reuter’s Lisbon correspondent. The article says: “Portuguese opinion demands complete enlightenment from Japan on events in Timor since the invasion, especially on the situation of many Portuguese. Reparations must be immediate and complete. Portugal cannot tolerate longer any Japanese attempt to maintain the status quo in the island.”

The demand, which the newspaper states is authorised, follows on an interview between the Portuguese Premier (Dr. Salazar) and the Japanese Minister yesterday.
