LONDON, December 23
The battle for Vitebsk is growing’ in ferocity as the Russians smash througii deep enemy minefields and fortifications. Russian cavalry forces are carrying out outflanking sweeps. The enemy is fighting tooth and nail to beat off the Soviet attacks. He is bringing up reserves from the rear and making’ as many as 20 counter-attacks a day. The Russians are still relentlessly closing in on Vitebsk. On some sectors Soviet planes are playing’ havoc among' retreating enemy remnants and some roads have been completely blocked by the wreckage. Behind them the Russians are pushing on across the valleys of many frozen rivers.
