CHILDERN’S CONCERT , — ■] SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. ’ (“Times-Age” Special.) A large and appreciative audience 1 greeted the local senool children when ■ they gave a concert in the Pirinoa Hall. The performance, which was . voted one of the best staged here for < years, reflected the greatest credit on . the head teacher, Mr Scott, and his : assistant, Miss Merlet, and they are to 9 be congratulated on the success of their efforts. The rendition of the various items were warmly applauded, the ■ acting in most cases being above the i average. The following was the programme: —Song, “Gwina Lay Down Ma (Life,” all classes; girls’ drill, seniors; Ten Little Indians, juniors; Awkward Squad, senior boys; playette, “The (Lovely Princess,” juniors; English folk dance, senior girls; The Black Nag, Kohunui party; Nativity play, juniors; quartette, “Spring Time,” R. Carter, B. Bragg, R. Karaitiana and E. Enoka; verse speaking, seniors; figure formation, senior boys; song, “What God Made Mothers For,” E. Enoka; play, seniors; recitation, Tati Te Aroatua; recitation, Ami Te Aroatua; song, A. Mclntosh and P. Carter; recitation, lan Smith; songs, choir; action song, Maori pupils; finale, "Land of Hope and Glory,” the school. At the conclusion of the concert supper was served while the hall was being prepared for dancing. A competition was held, the winner of the first prize being Master Ring Carter, while the second and third prizes were won by Mr Harry Martin, who generously donated the prizes to the fund. The articles were sold and realised a substantial amount. The Monte Carlo dance for children was won by Lissie Herangi and John Kiwai and for adults by Miss B. Burling and Mr V. Burling. The music was supplied by a local orchestra and Mr S. Mclntosh acted as M.C. The school committee are grateful to all who gave donations and otherwise helped to make the gathering a very pleasant one for the children. Persona) Items. Mr S. Thomas has returned to his Air Force station after having spent a fortnight’s leave at Pirinoa. Miss C. Enoka, Dannevirke, is spending the school vacation with hei parents. Mrs Silvester is the guest of Mr and Mrs Frank Seward, Lake Ferry. < Mrs Marshall is staying with Mr and Mrs Peter Marshall, Waitapu. Mr Ken Staples has taken up his residence here. Private Jimmy Thorn er, writing from the Middle East to relatives here, states that he was in the best of health and was “going strong.” He had met several local soldiers who all appreciate the- gifts received from Pirinoa residents. Mr and Mrs W. J. Scott and family 1 will leave shortly to spend the school vacation with relatives in Hastings. Mr and Mrs Thompson are visiting relatives at Pirinoa. Mr A. M. Oldridge, Wellington, was ' a recent visitor to the district. Mrs Thorner Senr., New Plymouth, is staying with her son and daughter-‘in-law, Mr and Mrs Geo. 'Thorner, Tuhitarata. Mr and Mrs J. R. Te Whaiti and ■ family will spend the holidays at Pigeon Bush. Mr J. H. Tilson, Te Kopi, was a recent visitor to Wellington. Cutting of Trees. ! Another start is being made with the cutting of pinus insignus trees for a northern milling concern. Shearing Operations. Shearing operations here will soon be completed, the conditions having been most favourable —quite the reverse as compared with other years.
