CARTERTON
ORDER OF ODD FELtOWS ’ LpYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) P.G. Sister M. E. Eagle presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows held last evening. Sick pay and accounts totalling £37 15s 2d were ordered to be paid. Brother Gordon McPherson, who is serving with the forces overseas, wrote thanking the lodge for a Christmas parcel sent to him. Unde? date October 3, Brother A. R. Tankersley wrote forwarding Christmas greetings from the Middle East. Prior to the closing of the lodge the Noble Grand extended the season’s 'greetings to all members and hoped that ere 1944 was far advanced peace 'would have been declared, sentiments which were reciprocated by the secretary. It was decided not to meet again until January 17.
SWIMMING CLUB COMPETITIONS LAST NIGHT. The Carterton sWimming Club held its first night meeting last night, the competitions resulting as follows: Junior boys’ 25 yards handicap, D. Sullivan 1; ladies’ 25 yards handicap, Annette Fairbrother 1, Avar Sorensen 2; senior dive, P. Bond 1; junior dive, L. McPhee 1; intermediate handicap, Pat Bond 1, B. Desmond 2, B. McPhee 3. Rehabilitation Committee, At a meeting of the Carterton Rehabilitation Committee the following officers were elected:— Chairman, Mr H. Mortenson; secretary, Mr A. E. Pankhurst; farm committee, Messrs A. E. Reid and W. J. Thomas; business loans committee, Mr F. L. Barr and Mrs K. Reid; tools of trade, special grants account committee, Messrs H. Mortenson, F. L. Barr, P. T. Gooding and Mrs K. Reid. Mr Mortenson moved the following motion:—“That all committees be authorised to forward recommendations to the secretary for despatch to the central committee at Masterton, such recommendations to be approved by the general committee at the next meeting.” Seconded by Mr Barr and carried. Mr McDonald, of the State Advances Office, Masterton, dealt at some length with the position regarding the fin-, ancial assistance available and outlined the procedure to be adopted by the members of the various committees in respect to applications received from service men and women. Meetings will be held in the secretary’s office on the first Monday in each month. Post Office Hours. On December 25 and 27 and January 1 and 3 the Post Office will be closed in all branches except the ■ telephone exchange, and postmen’s and rural deliveries will not be made. Personal. Mr and Mrs G. Sadler, Matarawa, have received a cable from their son, Driver Alec Sadler, stating that he is safe and well. Improving Broadway Street. A start was made this morning by the borough workmen with the tarring and sanding of Broadway Street. The first coat of tar over the whole length i of the street should be completed be- [ fore the holidays.
