GREYTOWN COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS WATER RESTRICTIONS NOT TO BE ENFORCED (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, and Councillors W. A. Tate, I. Blissett, E. Balfour, G. F. Eagar, H. J. Farley, F. Wood, H. C. I Trotman and H. McKenna. The Cemetery Committee submitted the following recommendations: (1) That a further area on the eastern side be taken; (2) the fence and gates in the Catholic cemetery be painted; (3) that the sexton be employed for three days per week till Christmas for cleaning up generally; (4) that despite the increase in the charges, the revenue is insufficient to keep the cemetery in order and ask for a grant of £5O from the district fund account. Councillors W. A. Tate asked if it was intended to ask for this grant each year. Councillor Farley, in reply, stated that the revenue was not sufficient to maintain the cemetery, and it was quite possible that this would have to be considered. The credit balance which had been built up over a number of years had been expended in erecting the new fence.
The report was adopted. The foreman'was authorised to repair the swings that had been damaged by vandals at the park. The council decided to leave the key of the park camping ground at Nichols garage. The council gave consideration to the opening of the swimming baths. The mayor stated that securing a caretaker was the difficulty.
Councillor Farley moved that the baths be got ready for the school children. This was agreed to. It was further decided that a meeting be called to endeavour to get the adult stvimmers to form a club. Councillor Trotman offered to donate a new springboard. Councillor Tate moved that Councillors Trotman and Farley be authorised to deal with the repairs at the baths. The motion was carried. The council decided not to enforce the water restrictions unless this was asked for by the Fire Brigade. The mayor stated that the brigade pump would boost the pressure from the water race supply if required. The Wellington Education Board wrote accepting the tender of the council for top dressing the playing area at the Greytown District High School. The council decided to pay the foreman in lieu of his annual holiday. Councillor Farley stated that the, foreman’s holidays were overdue and that at present it was impossible for him to get away. The council consented to the issue of a proclamation for the splaying back of the corner of Papawai Road and Main Street.
At the conclusion of business the Mayor, Mr Horton, thanked the council for its co-operation during the year and extended the season’s greetings. Councillor Tate thanked the Mayor foe his remarks. Mr H. G. Carter returned thanks on behalf of the Press.
