WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY

NO TAGS ON BALANCE SHEET. DOG TAX COLLECTOR APPOINTED. (“Times-Age” -Special.) Councillor A. E. Reid presided ovei the monthly meeting of the South County Council held at Carterton yesterday. There wefe also present: Councillors A. McGregor, M McGregor, E. W.'Allen, R. O. Rayner L. S. Gallon and F. Court. An apology for absence was received from Councillor C. Cameron. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the Bank of £13,092 19s 7d. Arising out of the Taratahi waterrace report it was decided that the Clerk write to Mr W. Rayner pointing out the seriousness of blocking races to the detriment of property OAvners lower down. It was resolved that the council take legal action if races are found to be tampered with in future, i The audited balance sheet which was found to be correct and bearing no tags, Avas approved by the council and signed by the chairman and county clerk. It Avas resolved that the overseer round off the bottom end of Moreton Road leading on to Carter Road. The contractor for the supply of dog collars for the current year Avrote stating that it was impossible to get registration plates, and suggested that ■the county purchase a die and set of numbers to stamp on the leather. It was decided that the contractor be authorised to purchase a, die and numbers and to stamp the collars and loiward them to the county. Mr Stark, South Carterton, was appointed dog tax collector. It was resolved that the next meeting be held on Thursday, February °A vote of thanks was passed to Mr R. W. Roydhouse for the use of his premises since the earthquake. The chairman extended the season s greetings to the councillors, the county clerk and his staff, the overseers and staffs, and the “Times-Age” representative, which were reciprocated. BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY. A deputation comprising the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) and the Deputy Mayor' (Mr E. McKenzie), waited on the council in connection with the Carterton borough water supply. The Mayor said that the deputation was there for the purpose of getting some relief through the county from the difficulty the borough was faced in regard to an adequate supply of water. An agreement had existed between the two councils for over 40 years whereby the Borough Council Avas entitled to a sixth of the Avater race supply. It was thought that if permission Avcrc given by the county they could tap the supply from the water race and fill the borough pipes in this manner. _ _ Councillor McKenzie said that then water schemes had cost the ratepayers something like £40,000 and they had not yet got a decent supply of Avater. He spoke in support of the Mayor’s remarks. ■ Councillor M. McGregor said that so long as there was plenty of water in

the county water races the county should assist the borough. The deputation then withdrew. It was subsequently agreed to give consent to the scheme as outlined by the Mayor subject to the approval of the county water race overseer in regard to the concrete sump. It was also decided that the water race overseer, the county overseer and the county chairman visit the Greytown water works to inspect the valve system and sump in operation there. During the discussion it was stated that the Waingawa meat works used 100,000 gallons an hour from the Taratahi water races.
