BATTLES IN ITALY

NEW ZEALANDERS AGAIN IN ACTION CANADIANS FIERCELY ENGAGED CONTEST FOR STRATEGIC ROAD (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day. 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, December 15. The Algiers radio said Eighth Army troops were hourly closing in on the strategic Ortona-Orsogna-Guardigrelle Road, on the central sector. The New Zealanders are here again in action in the Maielia Mountains, on the left flank of the Indians. The Canadians and British are between the Indians and the Adriatic. The Canadians and Germans are fiercely attacking and counter-at-tacking in the Ortona-Guardigrelle area, across a ravine which is under constant shelling from Allied and enemy artillery. The Germans here appear to have massed one of their heaviest concentrations of artillery. The radio added that British patrols in the Fifth Army sector crossed the Garigliano River by rafts and swimming. They met little opposition. The Germans are concentrating heavy mortar fire against a sector which the Italians are holding.
