ATTACK IN FORCE
ON GERMAN AIRFIELDS ROUND ATHENS
PRINCIPAL FIGHTER BASE HEAVILY BLASTED.
DAMAGING BLOWS STRUCK IN OTHER AREAS.
LONDON, December 15
The biggest Force of bombers and fighters which lias ever flown to Greece yesterday pounded the three main airfields round Athens and the port of Piraeus.
More than 300 aircraft took part in the attack. The main blow was against the principal German fighter base in Southern Greece. Flying Fortresses dropped a concentration of bombs which the crew believe covered the entire length of the runway. Three hangars were hit. " A similar formation of Fortresses attacked the Eleusis aerodrome, the principal German bomber base in Southern Greece and Liberators went for a nearby airfield and supply ships in Piraeus Harbour. Fifteen enemy fighters attacked the bombers and the escort of Lightnings. Four were shot down and the others turned away before they came within range.
