Civic Centre.
Mr J. Mawson, Town Planning Adviser, speaking in Wellington, stated that the consensus of the world’s leading town-planning authorities was: (1) That a civic centre should be near the central business district but not in it; (2) that it should be near to some main line of communication but not on it; (3) that the site should be large enough to permit of a spacious disposition of the buildings in a landscaped setting; (4) that the approaches to the centre should be such as to permit of the main facades of the more important buildings in the group being seen in proper perspective; (5) that there should be adequate facilities in or adjacent to the centre for the parking of cars belonging to people attending public functions or making other use of the buildings included in the centre, without interference with the normal flow of traffic.
