MAURICEVILLE

COUNTY COUNCIL < BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. \ (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham, presided. There were also present: Councillors D. Bennett, A. Gray, J. H. MacDonald and O. Welch. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor A. Forsberg. The clerk advised that building permits to the value of £244 had been issued during the month. It was resolved that the county employees be granted holidays as from December 24, 1943, to January 4, 1944, both days inclusive. It was decided that a penalty of 10 pel - cent be added to all rates not paid by February 11, 1944. A soecial meeting of the Council will be held on Monday, January 10, 1944, at 11 a.m., for the purpose of deciding what working day in the week shall be the statutory half-holiday for shops in the County of Mauriceville for the year 1944-45. The County overseer, Mr P. N. Jamieson, reported that satisfactory repairs had been carried out to the railway crossing at the Mauriceville Lime Works.

The action of the chairman and clerk in making a report to the Public Works Department on the general condition of the roads and highways throughout the county was approved. Tenders were received for the erection of a cottage for the County overseer, and Councillors E. W. Cheetham and A. Forsberg were appointed to deal with the tenders, with power to act.

It was resolved to offer for sale by tender a tractor owned by the Council. The chairman conveyed the season’s greetings to members of the council, the county overseer (Mr Jamieson) and his staff. These greetings were reciprocated by councillors present, and also by Mr Jamieson on behalf of his staff. SCHOOL PICNIC CALF AND LAMB COMPETITIONS The Mauriceville East School held its calf and lamb competitions and annual picnic on Mr Allan Caineron’s grounds on Saturday. The gathering was. a most successful one, there being a record number of parents and friends present. Mr H. ATHLETIC EVENTS The chief athletic events resulted as follows: School championship race, 120yds: Melva Smart 1, lan Baine 2, Dawn Wilson 3. Senior girls’ race, 75 yds: M. Smart 1, M. O’Niell 2, D. Wilkin 3. Junior girls’ race,'2syds: J. Anthony 1, M. McWhirter and B. Smart 2, G. Topp 3. Senior boys’ race, 75yds: I. Baine 1. T. McGruddy 2, Boy Smart 3. Open consolation race, 50yds; J. Baine 1, B. McKeown 2, J. Adamson 3. Junior boys’ race, 50yds: D. Anthony 1, B. McGruddy 2, N. Jamieson 3. Senior girls’ skipping race, 50yds: M. O’Niell 1, J. Wilkin 2, S. Smart 3. Neatest hoop jump, girls: M. O’Niell 1, U. Olsen 2, D. Wilkin 3. Boys’ bound: 1. Baine 1, N. O’Niell 2, R. McArley 3. The many other novelty events proved popular. The junior members showed promise of becoming good athletes.

The chairman of the school committee, Mr F. Pain, thanked those present for their attendance and all who had in any way assisted in making the gathering such a success. Daphne Wilkin, on behalf of the school children, made a presentation to the head teacher, Mrs C. M. Childs, and thanked her for the many kindnesses shown to the children throughout the year. Mr P. Jamieson, on behalf of those present, thanked Mr and Mrs Pain for the use of their home. Mrs Childs and Mr Pain suitably replied. Mrs Pain presented the prizes to the winners in the calf and lamb sections, as well as the school prizes won by the pupils during the year. All the children >present received a gift.
