FARMERS’ UNION
WAIRARAPA PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE TRIBUTES TO LATE J. C. COOPER. A meeting of the Wairarapa provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union was held in Masterton today. The president, Mr Hugh Morrison, presided. Pastor D. Edwards led in prayer. Tributes were paid to the late Mr J. C. Cooper. Mr Morrison said Mr Cooper was a foundation member of the Farmers' Union and in the early days one of the most prominent men in New Zealand. Mr Cooper put up a great fight for freehold rights and it was largely due to him that the Waingawa Freezing Works were established in the Wairarapa. Mr J. H. Bremner said Mr Cooper was the first vice-president and the second president of the Pahiatua branch and was an acquisition to any organisation. Messrs H. Bennett, L. T. Daniell and J. H. Heckler added to the remarks of previous speakers.' Mr Daniell said the water lower at Kourarau could well be Mr Cooper's memorial. A motion of condolence was passed with Mr Cooper’s relatives. “The days of muddy roads are long since past,” observed Mr Morrison, when a resolution was passed urging that increased supplies of steel for horse shoes should be made avail/able.
