STRONGHOLD CAPTURED BY AUSTRALIANS AMERICANS ATTACK NAURU. AIR AND NAVAL BOMBARDMENT. LONDON, December 9. Wareo, the Japanese stronghold and important track junction in New Guinea, north of Finschhafen, is now in Allied hands. Australian forces, which have been closing in an Wareo in recent weeks, captured the place yesterday. It is announced in Washington that United States forces have attacked the Pacific island of Nauru. The attack was made by carrier-borne aircraft. The targets were also bombarded by warships.
