MEN ON FURLOUGH
EXTENSION OF LEAVE DUE TO CHANGE IN SHIPPING ARRANGEMENTS. SECOND DRAFT TO BE BROUGHT BACK. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) stated that the recent extension of leave granted to men on furlough from the Middle East had become necessary because of a change in shipping arrangements. As soon as it is known that shipping is available the men will be advised of the date on which they will be called into camp. Mr Jones also stated that arrangements were now being made for the return on furlough of the remaining members of the First, Second and Third echelons, and that a great majority would come in the next draft. General Freyberg had informed him that it would be necessary to hold back some of the officers and other key personnel, but these would be relieved as early as possible and be sent to New Zealand in small parties, subsequently to the next large draft.
