QUICK CHANGE
EFFECTED IN CRITICAL DAYS SPITFIRES IN THE BATTLE ' OF BRITAIN (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, December 9. A secret about'the Battle of Britain disclosed for the first time today shows that Britain had only between 800 and 900 Spitfires in August, 1940, says the aeronautical writer of the “Daily Express.’’ Pilots in the Battle of France complained that the Messerschmitt 109 was reaching a higher ceiling and had an advantage-in accelerating power and diving. The remedy was to change the two-speed propellers for the newer constant speed airscrew. Thirteen engineers were sent to 12 Spitfire stations. They quickly instructed picked crews of fitters in fitting the new airscrews. The engineers worked up to 21 hours a day and then went to other stations. Conversion sets for all existing Spitfires were delivered on August 2. The big German raids started on August 8.
