The following story came from occupied Holland: A German official, waiting for his train on a small railway station somewhere in the Netherlands left the platform to wash his hands and discovered on his return that his suitcase had vanished. He complained to a Netherlands workman about a country where such things can happen. Replied the workman laconically: “You should hear what happened to me. I went to wash my hands while I was waiting at the Cologne railway station, and when I returned my suitcase was gone, the platform was gone, the whole ‘ruddy’ station was gone.” i
