SCHOOL GARDENS I AWARDS IN COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The judge of the school garden competitions, Mr L. Robinson, of Masterton, reports having completed his judging. He found the plots at the various schools he visited not quite up to the standard of past years, no doubt due to unfavourable spring conditions. Some of the schools did not enter the competition, which was a matter for regret in view of the fact that so much publicity had been given to "Dig for Victory.” The judge’s awards are as follow: — Best school garden in South Wairarapa (challenge shield).— Longbush School, 89 points, 1; Gladstone School, 86 points, 2; South Featherston, 84 points, 3. Best individual vegetable plot. — South Featherston School: Trevor Snell 1, Raymond Snell and Billy Sorensen 2, Victor Ahipene and ■ Rex O'Shea 3. Longbush School: Ray Henderson and John Cooper 1, Russell Rutherford and Jack Homer 2. Peter Cooper and lan Scott 3. Gladstone School: Lily Haeata and Myra Taylor 1, Frances McGregor and Nola Crewe 2, Adeline Naera and Edith Meta 3. Best flower plot (girls only).—Longbush School: Irene Henderson and Marion Scott 1, Doreen Dennett and Muriel Palmer 2. Best individual plot in all the above classes, flower, vegetable or farm plot. -Lily Haeata and Myra Taylor, Gladstone School, 1. Personal Items. Word has been received by Mrs N. Benge, Kiddie's Lane, Carterton, that her son has been wounded in battle. Mr and Mrs Maxwell, of Papatoetoe. are the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Conwell, Brooklyn Road. Sgt. Gordon McPherson, N.C.O. School, Infantry Wing. N.Z. Expeditionary Force Overseas, has written to the secretary of the Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows, Carterton, thanking members for their Christmas greetings and the parcel sent to him, which arrived in good condition. He appreciated the kindly thought behind the gift, and stated that the contents of the parcel were being put to good use. He stated that he had met many Manchester Unity Odd Fellows. Miss D. M. George has passed the senior and Miss W. M. Hurley the junior Public Service examination for shprtljqnd-typists, held last month. Both are on the stall of the Public Trust Office, Carterton.

Band Concert. Members of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band will play a programme of music at the Band Rotunda, Carrington Park, at 2 o’clock on Sunday afternoon. Druids’ Lodge Juveniles. There was a good attendance of members of the Pioneer Lodge, No. 25. United Ancient Order of Druids, held last night. The newly-elected officers were installed by Superintendent Bro. W. Fryer, after which the officers returned thanks for their election. An invitation from Totara Lodge, No. 3, for the Juveniles to attend the installation meeting on December 13 was received and accepted. Twenty members signified their intention of attending. At the conclusion of Lodge business, visitors were entertained at supper by the juvenile members. Calf and Lamb Rearing Contests. On Saturday next the final competitions in connection with the Wairarapa Girls and Boys’ Calf and Lamb Clubs will take place on the Carterton showgrounds, commencing at ll o'clock. The judges will be Messrs Mclntosh, of Dannevirke (calves) and Blatchford, of Matserton (lambs). The committee wish to make it known to parents and children that the committee supply tea and soft drinks, but that they will be required to bring their own lunches.
