CALVES AND LAMBS
CHILDREN’S REARING COMPETITIONS GREYTOWN AWARDS. RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES. The annual calf and lamb judging took place at .the Greytown School yesterday. The entries totalled 36 calves and 30 lambs —a record for the school. Mr D. Stuart, of Masterton, judged the calves and Mr J. Stringfellow the lambs. The championship in the grades section was won by Bruce Hutchings. The champion longwool lamb was Shown by Ann Baker, and the Shortwool by John Linton. f The champion calf (purebred) exhibited by Dawn Morgan, and the judge congratulated the winner on having such a, fine calf.
Mr Stuart expressed his pleasure at the manner in which the children had 'handled their calves. The handling by the' younger pupils in particular was excellent and clearly showed that they had given a lot of care to their wrok. Mrs R. Beu, president of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, presented a silver cup to the winner of the champion calf. Mr Stringfellow said the lambs were a much better lot than those that came forward last year. This was most gratifying, considering the bad weather early in the season. The chairman of the committee, Mr H. G. Carter, thahked allwhohad contributed to the success of the gathering and the children were given a holiday for the rest of the day. Junior section: —Type and condition: Bruce Hutchings, 1: June Hammond, 2; Mary Huntley, 3. Care and’ handling: Dick Hetherington, 1; Malcolm Hammond, 2; Richard Huntley, 3. Championship: Dawn Morgan, 1; Bruce Hutchings, 2; Audrey-Morison, 3. Special prizes for grade calves: Bruce Hutchings, 1: June Hammond, 2; Bill 'Grigg. 3. LAMBS. ' Seniors: —Shortwool lambs: Jean Innes, 1: Joy O’Neale, 2: Irina Morrison, 3? Juniors: —Longwool: Anne Baker, 1; Maureen Smith, 2; Freda Chappell. 3. Special prize: Audrey Lyster. Shortwool: John Linton, 1; Margaret Crawford, 2; Clarence Brooks. 3. Special prize: Marylene Dawson.
