SMUTS’S SPEECH
REFERENCE TO FRANCE. QUESTIONS IN HOUSE OF COMMONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) RUGBY, December 7. In the House of Commons, questions were asked about General Smuts's speech, in which he said that France would disappear from the Great Powers after the war. A Labour member, Mr Shinwell, asked the Deputy-Prime Minister (Mr Attlee ) whether the speech represented the views of the Government. Mr Attlee said that General Smuts himself had made it clear that it was only an informal talk to which he himself would not like to be held. It was not a declaration of Government policy. Government policy regarding France remained as stated in the King’s speech, which said: “We look forward to the liberation of France and her restoration to the ranks of the Great Powers.”
In reply to another question, Mr Attlee added that General Smuts’s speech had been published merely at his own desire.
