Wellington is to lose the services of the Rev. H. W. Newell, M.A., 8.D., who has been minister of the Terrace Congregational Church for the last 14 years. Mr Newell has accepted the invitation to become the first fulltime secretary of the National Council of Churches in New Zealand, with headquarters in Christchurch. The appointment is the outcome of the World Conference of Churches, held in India some five years ago, when it was decided that there should be a National Council of Churches in each country.
Though no date has been fixed for his departure, it is the intention of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Nash, to resume his duties in Washington as New Zealand Minister to the United States. ,He said yesterday that as the health of the Prime Minister improved he was planning to get away. Before the General Election it was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, that if the Government were returned he intended to ask Mr Nash to resume his post at Washington. Since then Mr Fraser had been on the sick list, and as the duties of Deputy Prime Minister have devolved on Mr Nash his departure has been delayed.
The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, who for the past ten days has been back in hospital, returned to his home at Northland yesterday. At the State luncheon yesterday in honour of the members of the Canadian Press delegation, the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Nash, said that Mr Fraser had had to go into hospital again for the removal of a small abscess. He had come out of the hospital that day and was well on the mend. The Prime Minister was confined to his home for over a fortnight following the Ngarimu Victoria Cross Investiture celebrations at Ruatoria on October’ 6, and toward the end of the month he entered Lewisham Hospital for an operation for an internal abscess. He left the hospital on November 18, but a week ago last Friday returned there again.
