CALCUTTA RAID
TWO JAPANESE AIRCRAFT DESTROYED FOUR OTHERS PROBABLY SHOT DOWN. SOME FATAL CASUALTIES IN CITY. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) CALCUTTA, December 5. The Japanese daylight raid on Calcutta was the first since April 27. Residents to'ok the raid calmly. An official communique states: “Japanese bombers, escorted by fighters, attacked Calcutta this morning in two waves. Reports indicate two of the raiders were destroyed and four others probably shot down, by fighters and antiaircraft batteries. Some of the casualties caused were fatal.” A British Official Wireless message states that the attack quickly developed and a clear sky was soon filled with puffs of smoke. An official statement issued by Combined Headquarters in Eastern India said: “Japanese aircraft raided the Calcutta area today. A number of bombs were dropped, causing slight damage and some casualties.”
