ARCHBISHOP O’SHEA
FIFTY YEARS IN PRIESTHOOD. GOLDEN JUBILEE YESTERDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. It was 50 years ago yesterday that five young men were ordained to the Catholic priesthood in St. Joseph's Church, Buckle Street, Wellington, by the Rt. Rev. J. J. Grimes, first Bishop of Christchurch. Three of these were New Zealanders, who had completed their course as foundation members at St. Patrick’s College, and had gone on to Meanee, which had opened with their arrival in the year 1890? Their names were Stanislaus Mahoney, Thomas Malone, and Thomas O’Shea. The other two were young Marist students from France, Augustine Galerne and Eugene Chapelle. Of those five young priests, only two have survived the years. One is Archbishop O’Shea, Metropolitan of New Zealand, and the other is Father Galerne, at present attached to the Australian province of the Society of Mary. In view of the fact that the Archbishop celebrated his golden jubilee in the priesthood yesterday, congregations throughout the Archdiocese of Wellington have been asked to offer their -masses and communions by way of thanksgiving.
