RED CROSS SOCETY

MASTERTON SUB-CENTRE. ASSISTANCE TO DISABLED SOLDIERS. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society was held last night when Mrs Tolhurst presided. A recommendation from the occupational handcrafts committee that the cash returns from the sale of goods, be expended on the purchase of further materials was adopted. A letter was received from the Waii’arapa Power Board stating that the work of installing points at the disabled soldiers workshop, the cost of which was £8 3s 7d, would be given as a donation to the disabled soldiers. The secretary was instructed to write and thank the Power Board for this generous donation. A case of distress was dealt with and the sum of £4 was voted towards assistance. It was decided that the working groups go into recess until the beginning of February, 1944, unless called upon to fulfill any urgent requirements. It was reported that the disabled soldiers were working in connection with a shop day to be held in Masterton on December 22. It was stated that the disabled soldiers wish to express their thanks to Messrs Mackley, Vowell, Russell, and the Masterton master builders for timber and- wood supplied and to Mr Dagg for dressing the wood. Thanks were extended to the Power Board for tubing for pram handles, to Miss Grant for scrap materials, Mrs Dallas for fur, to Mrs and Miss Beale, Mrs Thompson and Mrs Bishop foi supplying afternoon teas at the club, and to Mr Stimpson for a donation foi the teas. It was notified that all sub-centres had been asked to assist with the raising of £2OOO towards the cost of supplying Vitimin D to the people of starving occupied countries. It was decided that a donation of £lO for this purpose be sent from the Masterton Sub-Centre. . Mrs Tolhurst was appointed to represent the sub-centre at a meeting to be held to discuss a street collection to be made for funds for a hostel foi members of the Merchant Navy. The next meeting of the Sub-Cemr will be held on February 2.
