WAIRARAPA COMPETITIONS JUDGING AT KAHUTARA AND ELSEWHERE. I PRIMARY SCHOOL CONTESTS. Further reports of calf and lamb competitions in the Wairarapa are: — At the-Kahytara School the competitions were judged on the occasion of the annual gala day at the school, when the children’s work was on display, including an excellent assortment of arts and crafts. A produce stall was also in evidence and various competitions helped to raise money for the Junior Red Cross. Eleven calves were judged by Mr A. Johnson, of Greytown, and 10 lambs by Mr Robertson, of Carterton. Results were: — Calves:—Handling: Tom Ness, 1; Don Sadler, 2; Stuart Ross, 3. Condition: Isobel Humphries, 1; Shirley Cole, 2; Allan Ross, 3. Grade, dairy type: Don Sadler, 1; Enid Scadden, 2; Bob Bargh, 3. Pedigree (one entry only): Tom Ness, 1. Champion calf: Tom Ness. Lambs: —Blackface: J. Nikolaison, 1; Ngaire Maisey, 2; Bob Bentley, 3. Whiteface: Mary Bentley, 1; June Pound, 2; Shirley Cole, 3. At the conclusion of the judging Mr Playle thanked the judges for their assistance and the visitors for encouraging the children by their attendance and interest.
TE ORE ORE At the Te Ore Ore School five calves and eight lambs were judged by Mr C. Oliver. The results were: — Calves: —Type: Margaret McDonald, 1; Noeleen Curry, 2; Shirley Mackley, 3. Care and handling: Walter McDonald, 1; Noeleen Curry, 2; Shirley Mackley, • 3. Lambs: Neville Larsen, 1; Judith Percy, 2; Shirley Larsen, 3. As this was the first time the school had entered in the competition, before the stock were judged, Mr F. C. Brockett, Instructor in Agriculture, addressed the children, giving them some hints and suggestions for the handling of calves in the ring, and also on preliminary care and training. Mr McDonald, chairman of the school! committee, thanked the visitors and the judge. Special thanks were due to the ladies of the district who provided morning tea. Mr C. Oliver responded on behalf of the visitors. SOLWAY At the Solway School five calves and four lambs were judged by Messrs A. E. Miles and C. Todd respectively. Results: — Calves: —Type: Joan Simonek, 1; Ray Palmer, 2; Jacqueline Griffiths, 3. Care and handling: Joan Simonek, 1; Ken Nichols, 2; Ron Montgomery, 3. Lambs: Jennifer Klink, 1; Beverley Simpson, 2; Shirley Butler, 3. Both the judges gave a demonstration on the points of the animals they had judged and explained the reasons for the awards. The headteacher, Mr A. W. Bird, thanked the judges for their services and the visitors for their interest. The prizes were presented by Mr C. Price, secretary of the school committee. Subsequent to the stock judging, a display of pansies and Iceland poppies, grown by the children, aroused much interest. The blooms were judged by Mrs McNaughton, the results being:— Pansies: Ken Nichols, 1; Thelma Woollett, 2; Lois Ross, 3. Iceland poppies: Ken Nichols, 1; Margaret Reynolds, 2; Nellie Southey, 3. OPAKI In the Opaki School calf and lamb competitions the judge was Mr Roy Wellington, and he made, the following awards: CALVES Care and handling: Laurence Keats 1, Jean Keats 2, Nancy Keats 3. Type: Edith Weston 1, Jean Keats 2, Laurence Keats 3. Champion calf: Laurence Keats. Grade calves: Edith Weston 1, Maureen Weston 2. LAMBS Best lamb: Allan Buick. After a demonstration by the judge a calf-judging competition for the children resulted: Joan Keats 1, Allan Sutton 2, Allan Rutherfurd 3,
