ADRIATIC END OF GERMAN WINTER LINE
Eighth Army’s Victorious Onslaught ’ in Italy HEAVY LOSSES INFLICTED ON GERMANS USEFUL GAINS MADE BY AMERICANS IN MOUNTAIN ZONE LONDON, December 1. The Eighth Army has broken into and through the German ■winter line on the Adriatic side of Italy. In giving this great news to reporters yesterday General Montgomery added: it been a very good show and I think our troops have done When General Montgomery spoke, Eighth Army forces were engaged in the task, since completed, of smashing German resistance on the vital five-mile ridge at the eastern end of the enemy line. The assaulting troops are now three or four miles beyond the Sangro on a front of nearly twenty miles inland from the Adriatic, and. in their advance have inflicted very heavy losses on the Germans. . The Eighth Army’s famous artillery continues to batter the German positions and the Allied air offensive is hitting the German battlefront with shattering force. On the Fifth Army’s front the Americans have usefully improved their positions in the hills. The fate of the Adriatic sector may profoundly affect the position here.
