Mr A. Congalton, till recently senior supervisor in the mail branch at Wellington, and formerly of Masterton, has succeeded Mr M. W. Cummins as superintendent of mails at Wellington.
The engagement is announced of Evelyn May (W.A.A.F.) youngest daughter of Mrs and the late Mr A. Johnson, Pihautea, to Edward Joseph (R.N.Z.A.F.), eldest son of Mrs C. Bonnell, Sandy Bay, Nelson.
The Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, and Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P., returned to Auckland yesterday from a visit of one month to Australia to study wartime conditions and political questions. They visited Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle, and Adelaide. Mr Holland will leave for Wellington tonight. There died recently at Pahiatua, a well-known district pioneer in the person of Mr John George, who was born in Wellington, and went to the Forty Mile Bush in 1888. Later he farmed for many years at Kaitawa and retired some 15 to 20 years ago to liVe in Pahiatua. Mr George is survived by seven daughters —Mrs Fulcher (Pahiatua), Mrs Withers (Auckland), Mrs Stewart (Featherston), Mrs Mills (Pahiatua), Mrs Taylor (Waitara), Mrs Tattersall (Dargaville), and Mrs Strong (Lower Hutt).
