Religious Education. A resolution, that “the Government be urged to amend the Education Act by deleting the secular clause and introducing a system of religious education as part of the school syllabus,” is to be sent forward from the Wellington School Committees and Education Association to the New Zealand Federation of School Committees and to the Education Board. The meeting of the association on Monday night decided on this course of action by a majority of four in a vote of 26, and a note of the state of the voting is to accompany the resolution when sent forward. Fertiliser Output. The decline in the production of superphosphates and chemical fertilisers in the Dominion in the year 1942-43, as compared with the output in the previous year, is set out in the Abstract of Statistics for October. The loss of supplies of rock phosphate from Nauru and Ocean Islands due to enemy occupation was the chief factor responsible. The output of superphosphate from the nine works in the country fell to 156,036 tons, exclusive or serpentine superphosphate, the Abstract states. This represents a decline of 53.8 per cent on the previous year’s production. The fall was partially offset by the substantial production of 142,091 tons of the serpentine superphosphate. The production of chemical fertilisers fell by 56,002 tons, a reduction of 43.3 per cent.
Cartage of Skins. Before the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr P. Skoglund) yesterday afternoon, Mr H. H. Daniell appeared in support of an application to have a service relating to the cartage of skins to Wellington restored. He told the Authority that the service was cut out because his client had been refused tires and petrol. His client was present at a conference in Wellington of wool scourers, who interviewed the Tire Controller about the position of the industry. They were advised to form a committee. That was done and the strange part, said Mr Daniell, was that the president and secretary of the committee only were granted petrol and tires while all the others in the industry were refused. His client had the spectacle of seeing lorries from outside areas operating in his district. Mr Skoglund granted the licence applied for.
