BOROUGH AFFAIRS

CARTERTON COUNCIL RESTRICTION ON USE OF WATER FOR GARDENS. DESIGNS TO BE INVITED FOR TOWN CLOCK. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided oyer the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council held last night. There were also present: Councillors E. McKenzie, W. Hart, H. Mortensen, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, Howard E. Jackson and O. W. Wolters. An apology for absence was received from Councillor W. R. Harry. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £1220 9s 6d in the district fund account and a credit of £492 2s 5d in the gasworks account. The Health Officer wrote in regard to the borough sewerage, drawing attention to the need of improving conditions and to the recent overflow of sewerage on to private properties. It was resolved to get the authority of the Government to consolidate the new proposal with the existing loans, and that Mr O’Shea be asked to proceed immediately with the work in connection with the authority. The borough solicitor wrote regarding the land offered by ■ the Railway Department for the street from Belvedere to Wheatstone streets. It was decided that the Mayor and Councillor McKenzie decide on the actual site of' the road and put in hand the survey, etc. A rebate of £5 was granted to the Wairarapa P. and A. Society in connection with the water rates. New water connections were granted to Messrs J. O’Loughlin and H. Mortensen and to Mesdames E. Peters and C. Stubbs. It was resolved that the borough foreman flush out the dead end of the water mains in the borough at night. It was decided that the borough solicitor be instructed to take steps to close certain premises in Pembroke Street in occupation as a dwelling. It was resolved that the tarring and sanding of Broadway be completed before other work was put in hand. If possible the tarring of Rexwood Street will be undertaken. "

The fixing of the date of the official opening of the Carterton swimming baths was left in the hands of the Town Clerk.

Mr C. L. Curtis wrote asking the council’s consent to demolish the “Bianca” boarding home and to erect an apartment house in its place. It was resolved that the council agree to the demolishing of the building, but opposed the erection of an apartment house of the design proposed. The question of the school gates being locked against pedestrian traffic was brought up by a councillor. It was decided, by six votes to three, that as a public roadway existed the small gate be not locked so as to allow access to the sports grounds every day in the week.

The Town Clerk’s action in arranging for the grass to be cut in borough streets before Christmas by Mr G. Goodin, and tp allow the latter to take the grass, was approved. Mr Magyer’s tender for a supply of dog collars was accepted.

It was decided that hose restrictions be imposed at once. The hours for the using of borough water through a hose were fixed at 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. It was resolved, ‘ on the motion of Councillor H. Mortenson, seconded by Councillor DeLacey, that a comprehensive report be obtained in connection with a better water supply. The matter of controlling traffic in the Carterton streets on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve was left to the Town Clerk to discuss with the traffic officer, and report to the next meeting of the council. It was resolved that two prizes given 'by anonymous donors be offered for a design for the town clock, and the best position in which to place it. Entries are to close in January. It was decided that the next meeting be held on Tuesday, December 21, and that the borough offices be closed from December 24 till January 4.
